This year, we continue building momentum on imagining and executing our plan to disrupt and leverage the insurance industry as a means to unlock insurance as a powerful equalizer for those of us with our careers in this industry, as well as for the businesses and consumers that need insurance products on their journey to financial wellness and growth. We will examine what we’ve accomplished so far and set our sights on what’s next. Come prepared to be inspired and challenged to do your part of this journey to make some good trouble for the insurance industry.
Ivy founded Career Vines, a boutique consulting firm designed to increase representation, specifically at the C-suite level. With over 20 years of specialized experience in corporate culture and talent equity, Ivy is Chubb’s former Chief Culture Officer where she oversaw the cultural integration when ACE acquired Chubb in 2016. She was a key architect in forming The Black Insurance Industry Collective to broadly address the challenges impacting Black talent within the insurance industry.
She obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree (cum laude) in International Development from St. Mary’s University, Canada, and is currently studying towards an M.Sc. in Applied Neuroscience at King’s College, London.
Communication Impact is a session that will focus on how, we, the sisterhood can unapologetically operating in our power through communication. The session highlights will include:
– Communication among the sisterhood, black women, is unique: The What and So What
– Showing up for yourself and within the sisterhood takes resilience and strength
– Strategies to empower and uplift within the sisterhood
– Utilizing a storytelling format to offer shared experiences
– Owning Your Narrative: voice, vocabulary, body language and how we adjust based on our work environments
Vanessa serves as Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at WSIA. She directs WSIA’s evolving diversity, equity, and inclusion strategy to develop a culture of inclusion and belonging in the wholesale, specialty, and surplus lines insurance segment. As a Certified Diversity Executive, Vanessa influences systems to ensure DE&I is embedded into WSIA’s service and approach.
Vanessa is a graduate of Central Missouri State University and Webster University. She has served as an advisor or in a Director capacity for several community impact organizations including Operation Breakthrough, and KC Mothers in Charge, and is the past Board Chair at Jackson County CASA and the Loose Foundation. She has participated in various civic roles including KC Rising, Project Equality, and the KC Chamber’s Diversity Committee. Vanessa is a recipient of the Chamber’s ACE Award, the Lift Her Up Movement, and other numerous recognitions. She currently serves as Vice Chair for the newly formed Gamma Iota Sigma Foundation and is a GIS Advisory Council member.
Vanessa and her husband, Rev. James Sims reside in Kansas City, Missouri, and get joy in spending time RV’ing with their children and grandchildren.
She believes and lives by Ephesians 6:7 which says “Serve wholeheartedly as if you were serving the Lord, not people.”
